First into The In Tray this month is a trio of re-releases from Airfix, all to 1:72 scale. The North American F-86F Sabre is a re-issue of the Heller kit and comes with decals for Major John Glenn’s 25th FIS, 51st FIW F-86F-30-NA MIG MADcomponents for unspatted landing gear. Decals are included for three Hs 123A-1 aircraft, of 3./JG 165 ‘Immelmann’ at Furstenfeldbruck, 1937; FFS Schule (A/B) 71 at Prossnitz, 1941 and No. 61 Sqn of the Spanish air force in 1945.
MARINE. Next is the Northrop F-5E Tiger II, which, if you use either of the provided decal options – for the 527th AS at RAF Alconbury, 1990; or VMFT-401 at MCAS Yuma, 1996 – will leave you with a set of Mk 82 bombs and a Pair of Mavericks for the spares box.
Lastly, the Panavia Tornado F. Mk 3 is now available with decals for three recent aircraft. These include aircraft of No. Ill Sqn, RAF at RAF Leuchers in August 2002; No. 56 Sqn at RAF Conningsby in July 2002 and an Italian air force machine of 36° Stormo, 12 Gruppo at Gioia del Colle in 1999.
Further news has also emerged from Airfix concerning the new 1:48 BAE Systems Hawk kits. Taking the form of the Hawk T. Mk 1A in Red Arrows finish and Hawk Mk 100 in Australia or NATO Flying Training in Canada markings, the kits should be available from the end of July and Airfix reports a great deal of prerelease demand.
AMtech has sent us its development of the 1:48 scale Esci Henschel Hs 123 kit. As well as the basic kit parts, the box contains a bag of finely detailed resin cockpit parts, plus a separate sprue of
MPM has sent three resin upgrade sets for the l:72-scale Eduard L-39ZA kit, under the name of CMK. Set 7085 is the armament set, but it is rather more than that. It supplies a complete nose, with access covers off, inside which are the boxes containing the radio, etc. Also included are the fold-down boarding steps, the underfuselage gun mounting and the exhaust system. Set 7084 is the exterior set and consists of the wheel well interior and doors, all the flying surfaces and the wheels, complete with etched-brass inserts. Set 7083 is for the interior and supplies a one-piece cockpit bath, seats, cockpit combing and instrument panel. Added to this are etched-brass instrument frets and many more etched items that are minute to say the least. Lastly, a vacform canopy is provided to show off the detail.
