Luftwaffe at War: Air War over the Atlantic Manfred Griehl Greenhill Books £8.50

This is the latest in Greenhill’s Luftwaffe at War series. For those not familiar with them, these 72-page softback books consist wholly of contemporary photographs, mostly from German files. Most of the colour profiles used by modellers come from the evaluation of such material, and it is interesting to note that some of the beautifully defined colour patterns are not all they seem. Text books on Luftwaffe camouflage will show you technical diagrams illustrating the precise position of splinter patterns. This is fine on paper, but when it comes to the actual aircraft, sometimes the lines waver a little. Looking at some of the photographs of the Fw 200 you can see that some of the splinter scheme is quite roughly painted – and that is in the factory! This is just one example of where such photographs are important to the fastidious modeller. Luftwaffe enthusiasts could find this volume useful for those little details that make all the difference.
